Guy de Maupassant certainly has one view of “the bed.” The fact that he died at a young age after ongoing struggles with both physical and mental health kind of makes one think he probably spent a fair amunt of time in bed. Though, in one way, this kind of makes him an expert on the subject.
So, what does your bed really reveal about you? Think nothing? Think again. According to Cosmo:
Less is More?
If you’re into a minimalist look, you’re likely open-minded. Your bed mimics your Zen & unfussy attitude. The straightforward style shows you are direct and say what’s on your mind.
Cozy & Chill?
A style all about physical & emotional comfort shows you’re sentimental and loyal. Items like old quilts say your relationships, especially with friends, are important to you.
Girly & Chic?
A feminine bed suggests you crave feeling pampered & the bold colors say you’re outgoing. The eye-catching details indicate you thrive as the center of attention.
All Jumbled Up?
A rumpled bed indicates you’re a bit disorganized. But your messiness also means you don’t sweat the small details (like matching your sheets) & tend to be spontaneous.
Forget what you’ve heard about the eyes being the window to the soul. The bed you sleep in is the window. Your bed shows your personality, habits, hygiene & most of your irritating little idiosyncrasies. Your bed speaks volumes. Of course, we’re operating on the given that you hopefully have a bed. And, if you’re like us, you probably spend as much of your life as possible in that bed. And, what better way to get to know someone than to study the space they spend their unconscious time in? Whether you smother your bed in nice, fluffy pillows or strip it down to the bare minimals, a lot can be learned about you from your bed.

When we come full circle there is the feeling that we have come to a familiar place but we are somehow different.
Life is a circular journey through our issues & processes, and this is why things that are technically new often seem very familiar. It’s also why, whenever we work to release a habit, change a pattern, or overcome a fear, we often encounter that issue one last time, even after we thought we’d conquered it. Often, when this happens, we feel defeated or frustrated that after all our hard work we’re still dealing with the same problem(s). However, the reappearance of a pattern, habit, or fear, is often a sign that we have come full circle, and that if we can maintain our resolve through one last test, we’ll achieve a new level of mastery.
When we come full circle, there‘s often the feeling we’ve arrived in a familiar place, but that we ourselves are somehow different. We know we can handle challenges that seemed insurmountable when we began our journey, & there’s the feeling we might be ready to take on a new problem, or some new aspect of the old problem. We feel empowered & courageous to have taken on the challenge of stopping a pattern, releasing a habit, or overcoming a fear, and to have succeeded. At times like these, we deserve a moment of rest & self-congratulation before we move on to the next challenge.
Coming full circle is like stepping into a clearing where, for a moment, we can see where we came from & where we’re standing at the same time. Remembering that we’ll be tested again is important, but it’s also imperative to pause &take a look at the ground we’ve covered, honoring our courage, our persistence, and our achievement(s). Then and only then can we begin the next leg of our circular journey with a deeper understanding of where we’re coming from and where we’ve been.

“The artwork is approved, but we need to replace the skeleton, we think it might be homosexual, and that could ostracize the audience, it’s a very masculine industry.”
“Make it more good.”
I had a client that requested we meet in his kitchen. Halfway through our meeting, he excused himself to go to the bathroom but left the door open so we could continue to talk. I charged extra for that meeting.
“My wife really hates blue. So does my secretary.”
“When I get a business card this size (not 3.5 x 2 inches), I think that that person is a fag.”
“Can you make the circles a little bit rounder?”
“It seems to be taking a long time. Would it be quicker if I came down and sat with you guys through it all?”
“You’re gonna charge $400 for that? Aren’t you from India? What’re you going to do with $400?!”
“Can you bill your design time in 6 minute increments”
“I’m pretty broke right now.”

Fun isn’t something that is given or done to you, it is something you allow yourself to experience.
As adults, we often get so caught up in “grown up” business we can forget how to have pure, unadulterated F-U-N. This isn’t the kind of fun that comes from doing a specific kind of activity or being in a specific mood for fun. Rather, this is the fun born from the state of pure being. We see this kind of fun in small children who are so busy being fully present to their lives & in their own bodies that the glow of fun radiates from them just because they are alive: the delight that flashes across the eyes of a child who discovers water flows with the turn of the tap knob, or the squeal of pleasure from a young baby whose tongue is being tickled by cold ice cream; then there’s the full, infectious laughter of a child watching the same hat trick for the fiftieth time.
Back when we were children, this experience of pure delight didn’t have to come from a heightened, heady event in order for us to feel like our day had been made; and it can be that way for us again – IF we’re willing to remember & reconnect with the part of ourselves that knows how to be in the flow of fun.
You can begin this process by reminiscing on what was fun for you as a child. Think about what caused you to giggle in delight, or wriggle in pleasure, or burst into endless laughter that you couldn’t sit up straight no matter how much you wanted. Try spending a few moments with each memory & really feel what it was like to be in those experiences – allowing that feeling of pure fun to wash over you. It lives, in you – that feeling. It can’t be bottled, manufactured, or sold. You just have to call it back up in order to experience it again.
Pure fun happens when we’re fully engaged with ourselves & our world in every moment. It’s the spontaneous delight bubbling from us when we let go just long enough to bring it through; it’s the experience of natural, organic pleasure springing up from our bellies, through our souls, up through our faces down to our toes. We’ve naturally known how to have pure fun since we were babies & the flicker of lights caused us to jump to attention from the sheer enjoyment of being able to see. Approach your life today with the knowledge that pure fun isn’t something given or done to you; rather, it’s something you allow yourself to experience. So, get to spreading those fun wings & remember to stop sweating the small stuff, instead, embrace & turn these things on their head. WARNING: Once you start, you’ll have a hard time stopping.

Serene Sunday on eyewash
Regular periods of sleep are key to a healthy body and a clear mind as it is during sleep that your body renews itself.
When life gets busy, sleep is often the first activity we sacrifice. Considered a luxury by many busy people, sleep is actually as vital to sustaining a balanced life as are breathing, eating, and drinking. Getting sufficient sleep can be a potent energizer, just as not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling drained and sluggish. While eight hours is the average amount of sleep for which most adults should generally aim, the right amount of sleep varies upon the individual. Some people may thrive on just four hours, while others don’t feel well rested unless they’ve slept for ten hours. How much we sleep also varies, depending upon where we are in life. Young people often need more sleep, while Elders may need less. However, the benefits of sleep always stay the same. Regular & consistent periods of wakefulness / sleep are key ingredients to fostering a healthy body & a clear mind. After all, it’s during sleep that your body renews itself.
The ability to forgo sleep is considered by some to be an asset. But, while it may seem the nighttime hours can be better used for more productive activities, sleep in itself is extremely productive. During sleep, your body & psyche are both regaining their strength for the coming day. You may even have the unique opportunity to explore the hidden recesses of your personality while you dream. Meanwhile, your long-term memories are reinforced.
Many cultures engage in an afternoon siesta. Taking a nap is refreshing & can increase both productivity and creativity. Author Lewis Carroll is said to have conceived his idea for Alice in Wonderland while dreaming. A good night’s sleep also has been known to bring with it the gifts of clarity, wisdom, and a fresh perspective. Even the ancient Greeks thought of sleep as a gift from the gods. Giving yourself the gift of peaceful slumber, you’ll likely find yourself feeling alert, refreshed & ready for life’s challenges. You may also find yourself feeling more centered, thoughtful, and aware throughout the day so you can live your full potential. No matter what your ongoing complications may be, try and take time to mend yourself this weekend.
Taking small risks in life teaches us when to take big ones by helping us fine-tune our intuition. When we weigh the rewards & consequences of emotional risks such as asking someone out on a date, asking for a raise, daring to share a piece of artwork, or installing say, a porch swing in our living room, we can see that the benefits usually outweigh the negatives.
There are times when our sense of fear is guiding us correctly, however, we can only learn to understand our inner compass by using it regularly in safe situations and paying attention to the results. As we learn to stretch boundaries, we’re learning to be less concerned about the opinions of others & more about perfecting the art of taking appropriate risks that will allow us to more fully become the people we are meant to be.
Often, it’s easier to practice this newly discovered audaciousness in our homes. Daring to be bold and taking risks can easily be implemented within the walls of our own homes. With each brazen step, no matter how unconventional it may at first seem, we take an opportunity to test these bold decisions upon the fellow inhabitants & visitors to our space. Doing so will bestow courage to implement this outside our normal comfort zones. Remember, baby steps eventually lead to further journeys extending beyond our wildest imaginations!
Not only is design akin to creating a movie “set,” so too is life. Your home is like glimpsing a sneak preview for your own personal film. Depending on what’s going on in your life, your home is a direct reflection of your mood. Sometimes, a playful mood can inspire you the need to be entertained. You may find yourself inspired to host or attend a party because you’re feeling outgoing and good-natured. Or, perhaps you’re facing looming obligations, or or are feeling overwhelmed by many tasks yet to be completed. If you find yourself in the latter, consider the need for fun and humor in your life. This can be as legitimate as your need for sustenance. A humorous and spirited mind-set may be an indication you’re in need of soulful or friendly companionship. This can lead to an opportunity to gather your friends and family for an afternoon or evening of games and cheerful conversation. Satisfying your craving for fun, however, may require you to set your looming responsibilities aside for a time. Don’t sweat it! Remember, the backdrop you’ve created will help frame your mindset & obligations will always be there tomorrow…next day…next year.
With this in mind, don’t feel guilty to give into playful urges…this can add a sense of lightheartedness to your daily life that makes the everyday more enjoyable. Often, our personal and professional obligations overshadow our need for fun and relaxation. However, play is a creative act—it inspires imagination and gives you a means to reach beyond your usual limits. Play can show you a world that is filled with possibilities and allows you to examine your life within that limitless context. Play gives you a chance to ask “What if,” and explore your options. When you choose to embrace your playful mood, you’ll find life becomes much brighter. No matter which path you choose, the “set” that is your home not only reflects your personality, but is a chance to inspire yourself in day-to-day choices. Better make it good!
